MONEE – William “Billy” Morgan, Democratic nominee for State Representative in the 79th District, today released the following statement on Gov. JB Pritzker’s signing of legislation creating a statewide advisory referendum on providing property tax relief for working families:
“With the rising costs of groceries, gas, utilities, and prescription drugs, residents of the 79th Districts need relief. I want to applaud those who voted in the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate, and Gov. JB Pritzker for signing, Senate Bill 2412. This legislation empowers voters to make their voices heard on a statewide advisory referendum that would provide property tax relief for working families.
“In case this referendum passes, I will be proposing enacting legislation that provides for an annual property tax refund from the State of Illinois. Ten years ago, a similar proposal from Gov. Pat Quinn would have fully funded a $500 property tax refund to the taxpayers in owner-occupied properties.
“I urge all voters to vote ‘YES’ for property tax relief in the Nov. 5, 2024 general election.”
The legislation authorized the following question on the ballot: “Should the Illinois Constitution be amended to create an additional 3% tax on income greater than $1,000,000 for the purpose of dedicating funds raised to property tax relief?"
